CHARLESTON, S.C. (UCFAthletics.com) - Scrimmage No. 1 for the UCF men's soccer team is in the books as the Black and Gold played the College of the Charleston to a 1-1 tie on the road Saturday. Sophomore A.J. Nelson hit the back of the net for the Knights while sophomore keeper Shawn Doyle was credited with eight saves.
"It was a good start on the road to draw 1-1," said head coach Bryan Cunningham. "The possession was very good and we were able to create some good scoring opportunities as a result. Defensively, the players were organized and handled the attack of Charleston very well."
Nelson scored in the 18th minute with classmate Nicholas Keown-Robson picking up the assist. The College of Charleston responded in the 23rd minute when Tony Kattreh tied it up.
However the hosts were denied several times by the Knights' defense which combined for 12 overall saves (four team saves).
UCF's second scrimmage will take place at home Monday when it faces Tampa at 7 p.m. The third and final preseason match is set for Aug. 28 against Saint Leo at 6 p.m. The Knights' regular season will open up Sept. 1 against Jacksonville at 7 p.m. Admission to all home matches is free.
