SORRENTO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Four Knights completed the first round in the top-10 individually Sunday as the UCF men's golf squad raced out to a lead after one day of play at the Conference USA Championship at the RedTail Golf Club. UCF carded a 4-over 292 and is three strokes ahead of second-place Rice (295, +7).

Play at the 11-team, three-day tournament will resume Monday morning at 10:30 a.m. The Knights will tee off at 11:15 a.m.

UCF senior Simon Ward (County Monaghan, Ireland), who claimed medalist honors at the league championship in 2009, is tied for third at 72 (E). Sophomores Connor Arendell (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) are both tied for fifth at 1-over 73. Junior Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal) carded a 2-over 74 and is tied for 10th.

"I think our guys have been working extremely hard lately. We had a great practice round yesterday. I am very happy with how the guys executed today," UCF head coach Bryce Wallor said. "Some of our guys have a good knowledge of the course and that showed today."

The tournament started at 7:30 a.m., an hour earlier than its originally scheduled time, due to the threat of rain in the afternoon. The rain never came, but golfers battled heavy winds all round.

UCF and the Central Florida Sports Commission are hosting the event for the second-straight year. A year ago, the Knights claimed the tournament title, earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

Tulsa is third at 9-over 297, followed by Memphis at 300 (+12). Rob Laird of Tulsa is first individually at 3-under 69.

The event is open to the public and admission is free. Live statistics are available on Golfstat.com.
