ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team started its home event, the Rio Pinar Invitational, in strong fashion Monday, and has a big lead after two rounds at the 18-team tournament. UCF posted a 569 (-7) and is 15 strokes ahead of Charlotte and North Texas, who are tied for second.
UCF carded a 279 in the opening round, and followed that with a 290.
The tournament will conclude with one round Tuesday. Play will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The tournament is free and open to the public.
Four Knights are listed in the top-10 individually, led by sophomore Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) who is tied for first with Olafur Loftsson of Charlotte at 141 (-3). Both senior Simon Ward (County Monaghan, Ireland) and junior Nuno Henriques (Funchal, Portugal) are tied for third at 2-under 142.
Freshman Reid Martin (Mukilteo, Wash.) carded a 146 (+2) and is tied for eighth. UCF's other golfer, sophomore Connor Arendell (Cape Coral, Fla.), is tied for 21st (148, +4). Senior Devin Spies (Sarasota, Fla.) is competing in the event as an individual. He is tied for 40th at 7-over-151.
UCF is seeking its third-straight crown at the tournament.
Charlotte and North Texas both posted 8-over-584s on Tuesday.
