JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - A very windy afternoon greeted the UCF women's tennis team at Jacksonville Saturday, but the Knights persevered to defeat the Dolphins, 4-3. It was UCF's second-straight 4-3 victory as it improved to 3-1 on the season.
"We did a great job dealing with probably the worst wind I have ever experienced during a tennis match," said head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "We played smarter in the difficult conditions and came out with a solid team win."
Opening with doubles competition, the Black and Gold grabbed wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions over JU (1-2) to take a 1-0 overall lead. At No. 3, sophomores Christy Core and Andrea Yacaman cruised by Veronique Spencer and Virginia Iwinski, 8-2, before the No. 2 tandem of sophomore Alexis Rodriguez and freshman Jenna Doerfler sealed the first point by edging Fernanda Carerro and Iva Jaresova, 9-7.
Even though Jacksonville would pick three points in singles, one would occur at No. 1 as junior Jenny Frisell retired due to an injury, while another was at No. 6 where senior Katie Orletsky took Sara Landono to a third-set super tiebreaker and came up just short.
UCF would not have to sweat it out however, as the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 players all won in straight sets. Freshman Allison Hodges surrendered only three games in a 6-1, 6-2 triumph vs. Carerro at No. 5. Meanwhile, Rodriguez and Doerfler almost matched Hodges as the doubles partners only allowed four games apiece in their singles victories.
UCF will stay on the road for its next match, visiting Tallahassee to take on Florida A&M Feb. 13 (the Knights were also slated to meet Florida State next weekend but that match has been cancelled).
