ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - After opening the dual-match campaign last week, the UCF women's tennis team got its second win of the season by defeating Michigan State, 4-3. The Knights (2-1) got the doubles point and earned victories in three singles matches against the Spartans (2-2).
"It's great to play in a really tight match and come out with a win. We had to compete hard," said head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "It's going to be great for the future to have been in a really tough situation like this. This should only help build our confidence."
Senior Katie Orletsky and junior Jenny Frisell played at the number one doubles spot and defeated Manon Noe and Nicole Herzog, 8-6. At No. 3, sophomores Christy Core and Andrea Yacaman came out on top over Amy Barton and Whitney Wilson in a very close match, 9-8 (6).
Frisell had very little problems at the No. 1 singles position. Frisell only dropped three games, 6-2, 6-1, vs. Herzog. Freshman Allison Hodges also posted a win for the Knights. Playing at the No. 5 spot Hodges edged out Noe in the first set, 7-5, and dominated the second set, 6-2.
Yacaman had another battle with Barton in singles at No. 2, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (5). Yacaman's success over Barton clinched the Knights win over the Spartans.
UCF is at home once again playing Florida Atlantic Saturday at 2 p.m. Admission to all matches at the UCF Tennis Complex is free.
