ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Facing No. 15 Florida State, No. 25 Alabama and No. 33 Illinois, the UCF women's tennis team wrapped up the third and final day of the UCF Quad Tournament Monday. And it was a freshman who posted two wins as Winter Park's Jenna Doerfler earned victories in both singles and doubles.
"I'm really happy for our ladies. It was a great home tournament and we faced some tough competition this weekend," said head coach Stephanie Nickitas. "We hung in there with some of the top teams in the country. Our goal today was to finish strong and I think we accomplished that."
Meeting up with both Alabama and Illinois in doubles, the Knights split four overall matches, earning a win against each school. In the No. 2 position, Doerfler teamed up with sophomore Alexis Rodriguez and the duo outplayed Alabama's Alice Tunaru and Antonia Foehse by notching an 8-3 victory. And over at No. 4, sophomore Taylor Dubins and freshman Allison Hodges collected an 8-4 triumph vs. Illinois' Amy Allin and Annie McCarthy.
UCF then took on Florida State in five singles matches and it was Doerfler who once again got a "W" next to her name. After squeaking out the first set in a tiebreaker vs. Jessica Sucupira, Doerfler fell in the second set only to rebound in the third-set super-breaker for a 7-6(5), 3-6, 1-0(10-7) victory.
With the UCF Quad Tournament in the books, the dual-match season lies ahead for the Black and Gold as it gets underway at home Saturday vs. Florida Gulf Coast at 2 p.m. Admission to all matches at the UCF Tennis Complex is free.
