ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Junior lefty Johnny Sedlock struck out six in three innings of work and senior Matt Goodyear hurled three frames of hitless ball to lift Black to a 2-0 victory over Gold in the first game of the Black & Gold World Series Tuesday.

"I felt confident out there and I had to come out with all of my pitches," said Sedlock, who hails from Avon Park, Fla. "I didn't have the best fastball but you have to do what you can with what you've got and try and be successful. And I live off my changeup, it's my bread and butter. If I can use that effectively I don't have to have the greatest fastball. Overall, I love the fall so far. It's everything that I expected."

In the six-inning game, Sedlock did not walk a batter and gave up just one hit. For the Black offense, sophomore Beau Taylor led the way with two hits and a RBI while freshman Ronnie Richardson stole two bases and scored the game's first run.

After Sedlock cruised through the top of the first for Gold with two strikeouts, Black (which was wearing their gray uniforms) came through with the series' first run against junior Brennan Dobbins. Proving he could be a major threat as a possible leadoff man for the Knights this year, Richardson got the frame going with an infield single and swiped both second and third. Eventually with two away, Taylor grounded a single off Dobbins' glove for the 1-0 lead.

Sedlock came right back and promptly struck out the side in the second, leading to another run for his Black squad as freshman Anthony Caronia notched a two-out single to drive in sophomore Alex Friedrich, who got aboard on a double to left.

And the pitchers controlled the action the rest of the way. While Goodyear was busy earning the three-inning save, freshman righty Gregg Cooke went 2.0 innings without allowing a hit for Gold, sitting down one on strikes.

Game two will get underway Thursday at 9 a.m., while the fan-friendly series finale is set for Friday at 6:30 p.m.
