Week Two of Fall Camp Concludes for UCF Baseball

Oct. 13, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Two weeks of fall camp are almost in the books as the UCF baseball team held a short intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday. Senior righty Matt Goodyear dominated in his three innings of work, retiring all nine batters he faced, posting three strikeouts.

UCF has three more weeks of camp before opening up the Black and Gold World Series in early November. Games one and two will take place Nov. 3 and 5 at approximately 8:15 a.m., while the final game is scheduled for Friday Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. Admission will be free.

On Tuesday, the offense showed up early as Gold took a 2-1 lead over Gray in the first inning. Facing southpaw Nick Cicio, Anthony Caronia got things started with a base hit, stole second and scored on a single from Jonathan Griffin. Michael Holmes then plated Griffin with a single of his own for the 2-0 advantage.

When Gray dug in for its first at-bat, Darnell Sweeney greeted lefty Brian Adkins with a double to left center and eventually scored by way of a Shane Brown one-out base hit.

However Cicio and Adkins shut down the bats over the course of the next two innings, as Beau Taylor was the lone player to record a hit during that stretch.

Goodyear was the third and final pitcher of the day for either team and as a member of the Gray squad, he breezed through his three innings on the hill. When it was Gray's turn to bat in the final innings, assistant coach Jeff Palumbo took the mound as the Gold defense worked on bunting drills.

The Knights will be back on the field as a team Thursday morning, as all practices are open to the public.
