ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - In early September, the Knights will start preparing for the 2009-10 season with individual workout sessions inside the UCF Practice Facility. New assistant coach Robert McCullum is ready to get onto the court and teach.
McCullum, who has seven years of Division I head coaching experience, joined the UCF staff in late July. He says that he is excited about helping UCF's young players develop before the start of the season.
"Being on the court with the players is one of the areas that I enjoy the most. The preparation. The journey. If you get to the point in this profession where you do not enjoy the preparation, it is time for a change."
In mid-September, McCullum, head coach Kirk Speraw and the rest of the staff will hit the road to recruit. McCullum is eager to get on the road and tell prospects about all that UCF has to offer. Before the start of the 2007-08 season, McCullum visited the UCF Arena and watched the Knights practice. He is pleasantly pleased at all of the facility additions that have been made since that time.
"At that time, I got the chance to see the arena," he said. "The new offices were not completed, nor was the practice facility. When you think in terms of what is it that prospects find appealing, I think we have a lot of those items. One is living quarters. Apartment-style living is something that prospects and their parents find appealing. It gives them great proximity to this facility and classes. I think the second part is a really nice locker room. Our players have that. Then you look at the arena."
Between getting back on the court with his new players and getting the word out about UCF, McCullum is sure to have a busy, but rewarding month.
