ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Charlie Edwards has joined the UCF soccer program as a volunteer assistant men's soccer coach, head coach Bryan Cunningham announced Friday. Edwards played goalkeeper at the University of Louisville from 2004-08, and will work primarily with the keepers in his role at UCF.

A native of Lilburn, Ga., Edwards started 20 games in net during his playing career at Louisville. The two-year starter was a member of the 2007 Louisville team which advanced to the semifinals of the Big East Tournament and the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

"I am excited to bring Charlie onto our staff this season," said Cunningham. "Having played at Louisville in the Big East, he has experience playing at an extremely high level that he can share with our team. Our goalkeepers should improve and benefit immensely from working with and learning from Charlie on a day-to-day basis."

Edwards graduated in the spring of 2008 with a bachelor's degree in sports administration. He was a member of the Big East Commissioner's Honor Roll in 2006 and 2007.

Despite being a recent graduate, Edwards has compiled coaching experience at the club level. He coached the Oldham County Thouroughbreds in 2008 and 2009, serving as the head coach of the U-10 and U-12 boys' teams while also serving as the head goalkeeping coach of the top club level squad.

"I am very excited to be involved with such a great coaching staff and a program that is moving in a positive direction," said Edwards. "I am lucky to be learning from Coach Cunningham and look forward to the opportunity to work with the goalkeepers."

In 2008, UCF finished the season 7-11-1 and 3-4-1 in C-USA play to finish in a tie for third in the league standings. The Knights defeated Memphis 1-0 in the quarterfinals of the C-USA tournament, the program's first tournament victory since joining the league.

UCF's opener comes on the road on Sept. 1 when they travel to Tampa to face in-state rival USF. Prior to that contest, the Knights will host three exhibitions at the UCF Soccer Complex, beginning this Sunday morning at 11 a.m. when they welcome Rollins College.
