TULSA, Okla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF track and field team opened action in the 2009 C-USA Outdoor Championships Thursday with a light day of action in Tulsa, Okla. The three-day event kicked off with Thursday with only the hammer throw and 10,000-meter run being completed.
In the hammer throw, junior LaKendra Thames (Winter Garden, Fla.) finished in 12th place with a top toss of 154-11/47.22m while fellow junior Kelsey Poljansek (Milton, Kan.) notched the 14th position with a best mark of 148-9/45.34m.
In the 10,000-meters, sophomore Ocean Cohen (Sarasota, Fla.) took tenth place with a time of 38.46.18.
The first four of seven events in the women's heptathlon also took place on Thursday, with senior Natalie Braddock (Callahan, Fla.) and sophomore Samantha Shields (Orlando, Fla.) competing. Braddock is in tenth place after day one after a fourth place finish in the 200-meter dash (26.05) and an eighth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (15.52). Shields ranks 19th with a best performance of third in the high jump (5-4.25/1.63m). The long jump, javelin and 800-meter run remain in the event.
