ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Junior Kelsey Poljansek (Milton, Kan.) has been named the Conference USA Track and Field Co-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. Poljansek, who broke two school records and posted two NCAA regional qualifying marks, becomes the second Knight in as many weeks honored by the conference. She shares the award with SMU's Silje Fjortoft.
Sophomore Lizzie Harris (Miami, Fla.) won the same award last Tuesday, and Poljansek's honor is the fifth weekly honor for the track and field program since joining the conference. It is also the third of 2009 as junior Tiki James (Miami, Fla.) was named C-USA's Indoor Athlete of the Week on Jan. 20.
On Friday, Poljansek convincingly bested the previous school record in the discus with a toss of 167-11/51.18m. The mark is also an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Current UCF junior LaKendra Thames (Winter Garden, Fla.) held the record previously with a throw of 160-3.
Poljansek shattered the previous school record in the discus on Saturday with a toss of 167-11/51.18m. The mark was also an NCAA regional qualifying mark.
The Knights will hit the road this coming weekend to compete in Gainesville, Fla., at the Pepsi Florida Relays on April 3-4.
