ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Junior Kelsey Poljansek (Milton, Kan.) has been named the Bright House Networks Student-Athlete of the Week after posting two NCAA regional qualifying marks and breaking two school records at the UCF Invitational this past weekend.
Poljansek, a junior transfer who also set the indoor record for the shot put this season, saved her best effort for her sixth and final throw. She posted a mark of 49-1.0/14.96m, a throw which bested the previous school record of 47-8.50 by nearly a foot and a half. Throwing unattached, Zakeya Stinson finished fourth in the event with a throw of 47-7.25/14.52m. Junior LaKendra Thames (Winter Garden, Fla.), the previous record holder, claimed sixth with a toss of 44-8.0/13.61m.
Poljansek shattered the previous school record on Saturday in the discus with a toss of 167-11/51.18m. The mark was also an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Thames also held the discus record previously with a throw of 160-3.
The Knights will hit the road next weekend to compete in Gainesville, Fla., at the Pepsi Florida Relays on April 3-4.
