Orlando, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The future of UCF women's rowing shined over the weekend as the novice eight squad finished first in all four of its races. The perfect weekend at the Longhorn Invitational earned them the distinction of Bright House Student-Athlete's of the week.
Freshman coxswain Claire Frenkel, stroke Caitlin Matthews, Tina Bechtold, Michelle Haves, Lucia Pinelli, Chelsey Green, Nina Morgan, Margaret Lahmeyer and Alyssa Egan made up the novice 8+ boat. The young rowers impressed, with their best finish Saturday morning against Iowa. The Black and Gold clocked in at 7:13.6, well ahead of the Hawkeyes who finished 7:22.6. Perhaps their most exciting victory, however, was on Friday morning when the Knights narrowly defeated a tough Wisconsin team by just five-tenths of a second. The win propelled them into the rest of the weekend with wins over Kansas State and host Texas, posting times of 7:30.6 and 7:28.5 respectively.
The rowing team is back in action on April 4, when it hosts Duke in its inaugural regatta at the UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center. The event is set to get underway at 9 a.m. on Lake Pickett.
