AUSTIN, Texas (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's rowing team concluded the Longhorn Invitational Sunday, finishing the event with 10 victories on the final two days of competition, which included a sweep over Kansas State on Saturday night.
The Knights' novice eight squad of coxswain Claire Frenkel, stroke Caitlin Matthews, Christina Bechtold, Michelle Haves, Lucia Pinelli, Chelsey Green, Nina Morgan, Margaret Lahmeyer and Alyssa Egan was victorious in all four of its races on the weekend, posting its best time Saturday morning against Iowa. The Black and Gold clocked in at 7:13.6, eight seconds ahead of the Hawkeyes, who finished in 7:22.6. The novice 8+ boat also bested Kansas State with a time of 7:30.6 and host Texas, finishing in 7:28.5. On the opening day of the event, the novice squad also defeated a tough Wisconsin team, finishing in 7:30.3, in front of the Badgers' 7:30.8 showing.
UCF's second varsity eight and first varsity four also put together strong showings in Austin, as they both picked up three-straight wins over Iowa, Kansas State and Texas on the final two days of the event.
The Knights' second varsity eight boat defeated the Wildcats on Saturday night by almost one minute, posting a time of 7:23.4, in front of Kansas State's, 8:13.0. But, the team's best outing was earlier in the day, when they beat Iowa in 7:00.8. The Hawkeyes would finish the race in 7:13.5. The second varsity eight would conclude the Longhorn Invitational with a win over host Texas, clocking in at 7:15.7 ahead of the Longhorns' 7:23.14.
The first varsity four also clocked in with its best time of the event Saturday morning against Iowa with a time of 7:52.4. The Hawkeyes would finish 5.2 second behind the Knights in 7:57.6. Later in the day, the second varsity eight would cross the finish line 14.3 second ahead of Kansas State, before finishing strong on Sunday with a victory over the Longhorns with a time of 8:10.8.
The Black and Gold's first varsity eight squad would pick up its lone win of the Longhorn Invitational Saturday night in the race against the Wildcats, edging Kansas State by two-tenths of a second. The Knights would cross the finish line in a time of 7:21.6, while the Wildcats would post a time of 7:21.8. The squad's best time of the three-day event was posted Saturday morning. Despite finishing behind the Hawkeyes, UCF would record time of 7:06.4.
The rowing team is back in action on April 4, when it hosts Duke in its inaugural regatta at the UCF Intercollegiate Rowing Center. The event is set to get underway at 9 a.m. on Lake Pickett.
