AUSTIN, Texas (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's rowing team took to the water for the first time in 2009 Friday afternoon, with the Knights' novice eight boat narrowly defeating Wisconsin in the team's opening race at the Longhorn Invitational on Lady Bird Lake.
The squad of coxswain Claire Frenkel, stroke Caitlin Matthews, Christina Bechtold, Michelle Haves, Lucia Pinelli, Chelsey Green, Nina Morgan, Margaret Lahmeyer and Alyssa Egan posted a time of 7:30.3 to defeat the Badgers, who finished in a time of 7:30.8.
The Knights' first and second varsity 4+ crews posted times of 8:26.8 and 9:13.8, respectively, behind Wisconsin, and UCF's first varsity 8+ clocked in with a time of 7:31.9 just after the Badgers.
The second varsity 8+ finished with the Black and Gold's top time of the day, crossing the finish line in 7:31.4.
The three-day Longhorn Invitational continues for the Knights when they take on both Iowa and Oklahoma Saturday. The Black and Gold will go head-to-head with the Hawkeyes in the morning, with the first boat taking off at 9:36 a.m., before facing the Sooners and former UCF head coach Leeanne Craine and Kansas State later in the evening, beginning at 5:36 p.m.
The Longhorn Invitational wraps up Sunday morning when the Black and Gold races host Texas starting at 8:48 a.m.
