UCF Fastbreak - Jan. 14

Jan. 14, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - For another four days, UCF senior guard Jermaine Taylor (Tavares, Fla.) and Darryl Davis will share bragging rights. After Taylor totaled 18 points Tuesday at UAB, the cousins are tied for fifth in program history with 1,540 career points.

Davis played for the Knights from 1991-95. He was coached by Kirk Speraw for two years and was a member of UCF's 1994 NCAA Tournament squad. Like Taylor, Davis attended Tavares High School.

Davis goes to most UCF home contests and has witnessed Taylor develop into one of the nation's top players. Taylor has led the Knights in scoring in 15 of the team's 16 contests and is averaging 23.3 points in 2008-09.

"I think he knows that I am going to break his records," Taylor said of Davis. "I think he would rather me do it than someone else."

On Saturday when the Knights take the floor at Rice, Taylor should pass his cousin on the scoring list. In doing so, he will also move to second on the school's Division I scoring register. Ken Leeks (1988-92) is the all-time leader in the category with 1,763 points.

Taylor also needs just five points to enter the top 15 of the Conference USA career scoring list. Chris Douglas-Roberts, who starred at Memphis from 2006-08, is currently 15th with 1,545 points.

Tip-off for Saturday's game against the Owls is set for 4 p.m. Eastern. The contest will air on the UCF-ISP Sports Network and 740 AM in Orlando.

After meeting Rice, UCF will start a three-game homestand Wednesday, Jan. 21 against Southern Miss.

The Knights returned to Orlando from Birmingham, Ala., Wednesday morning. The squad will return to the practice court Thursday afternoon.
