Nov. 3, 2008

SAPPHIRE, N.C. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team carded an opening round 3-under 281 Monday to lead the 14-team field at The Hummingbird Intercollegiate at the Country Club of Sapphire Valley. UCF senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.) is atop the individual standings after posting a 4-under 67.

The second and final round of the event is slated for Tuesday. The teams were scheduled to play two rounds Monday, but were unable to due to frost.

The Knights hold a two stroke advantage over second-place Vanderbilt. Akron is third at 293 (+10).

Redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.) enters the final round tied for second, just a stroke behind Johnson at 68 (-3). He is tied with Vanderbilt's Hudson Johnson.

Two Knights - junior Simon Ward (County Monagahn, Ireland) and freshman Blayne Barber (Lake City, Fla.) - are tied for 16th (73, +2).

Competing as an individual, junior Devin Spies (Sarasota, Fla.) is tied for 29th at 3-over 73. A junior college transfer, Spies is making his Division I debut. Senior Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla.) recorded a 77 (+6) and is tied for 53rd after 18 holes.

The event is serving as the Knights' final tournament of the fall. The squad will open its spring campaign in mid-February.
