ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF men's basketball head coach Kirk Speraw announced Friday that R.J. Scott of Slidell, La., has signed a National Letter of Intent and will join the Knights next fall. Scott is a guard who stars for Salmen High School.

As a junior in 2007-08, Scott garnered Louisiana Class 4A All-State Honorable Mention honors after averaging 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Scott was named the St. Tammany Parish Player of the Year and also earned District 9-4A First Team honors.

Scott led the Spartans to a 31-4 mark and the district championship. Salmen posted a 16-game winning streak during the season and advanced to the semifinals of the state championship tournament.

"R.J. will be a great addition to our program. He is a very good shooter who is also a tough defender. I know that he is extremely excited about being a UCF Knight and we look forward to him joining our basketball family," Speraw said.

Scott was born in Orlando and lived in the area until he was 12 years old.

"This is a great opportunity for R.J.," Salmen head coach Jay Carlin said. "He is very athletic and can shoot and handle the ball well. He is tough on defense and plays above the rim. He is a special player and should be a big asset for the UCF program."

Scott will join a UCF program that has enjoyed great success under Speraw since joining Conference USA three years ago. The Knights have won 27 league contests since 2005-06, which ranks fourth in the 12-team conference during that span. The 2006-07 C-USA Coach of the Year, Speraw has guided UCF to three top-five finishes in the league.

Dating back to the start of the 2002-03 campaign, the Knights have won 122 games. That mark is good for 49th nationally and second among all programs in the state of Florida during that span.
