ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Sinua Phillips may have lacked stature on the court, but the diminutive point guard certainly knew how to fill up the stat sheet. From 1990-94, Phillips scored, dished out assists and recorded steals at a record pace.
A member of the UCF Athletics Hall of Fame, he holds the school single-season and career records for assists with 183 and 531, respectively. He also scored 1,028 points in four years and is the only player in program history to score more than 1,000 points and dish out at least 500 assists.
After coming to UCF from Coral Springs High School in south Florida, Phillips had his best campaign with the Knights as a freshman in 1990-91. The 5-foot-10 Phillips averaged 11.6 points, 4.9 assists, 3.2 boards and 2.3 assists.
Three years later, he played under first-year head coach Kirk Speraw as the Knights participated in the NCAA Tournament for the first time on the Division I level.
During his time in Orlando, Phillips connected on 107 3-point field goals. He also recorded 179 steals, which ranks in the top five in UCF history.
Phillips joined the school's athletics hall of fame in 2006.
Speraw's Knights are slated to open the 2008-09 campaign on Sunday, hosting North Carolina A&T at the UCF Arena at 1 p.m. Season tickets, which begin at just $99, are currently on sale. The 2008-09 campaign marks the UCF men's basketball program's 40th season. To commemorate the anniversary, UCF is unveiling the top-40 players in school history. Members of the UCF athletics communications office worked with UCF basketball historian Bill Beekman to select the best players who finished their collegiate careers as Knights. One player from the list will be recognized each Thursday at UCFAthletics.com.
