ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's rowing team begins its fall season Saturday as four novice 8+ boats are slated to represent the Knights at the Hatter Classic. Hosted by Stetson University, the event will be the first for the Black and Gold under the direction of first-year head coach Becky Cramer.
"This is the novice squad's first race and we are just excited to see what they can do on the water," Cramer said. "They are picking up the sport and learning very quickly, while having shown a lot of speed in practice."
All four entries will race in the novice event, which starts at 9:20 a.m.
Last season, the Knights claimed first place in the freshman/novice eight at the Hatter Classic. Despite taking a 30-second penalty, UCF's "A" boat went 20:25.80 to beat host Stetson by nine seconds. UCF "B" was third, while the "C" entry earned fifth.
Collegiate Novice events are limited to college scullers, rowers, and coxswains in either University/College Club or NCAA programs who have been competing for one year or less as of the Regatta Day. Experience in sculling events does not count as experience in sweep events and vice versa. Previous junior/high school rowing experience is allowed in this category.
