LA QUINTA, Calif. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team recorded a strong showing at The Prestige at PGA WEST, finishing fourth at the 16-squad event Tuesday at the Greg Norman Course. Led by a third-place performance from senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla.), the Knights finished ahead of six of the top-30 ranked teams in the nation.
UCF posted a four-under 284 during Tuesday's final round. The Knights concluded the tournament seven strokes ahead of fourth-ranked Washington (889, +25). The Huskies placed fifth. No. 12 Stanford finished just ahead of the Knights in third at 879 (+15).
Johnson carded a four-under 68 in the final round to finish at 211 (-5). He finished just a stroke behind TCU's Johan de Beer and UC Davis' Nate Pistachio, who shared medalist honors at six-under 210.
Junior Simon Ward (County Monaghan, Ireland) also registered a top-15 finish for UCF. He totaled a one-under 71 Tuesday and completed the event tied for 11th (220, +4).
TCU (861, -3) won the team title, followed by host UC Davis (871, +7).
Playing in his first event of the season, junior Mike Stern (Miami, Fla.) tied for 38th at 229 (+13). Senior Greg Forest (Palm City, Fla.) tied for 49th (230, +14), as did redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla.). On the final 18 holes, Schneider carded a one-under 71.
Play at the three-round event began Monday.
A year ago, UCF finished third at the tournament. Johnson posted a sixth-place finish in the individual standings at 213 (-3).
Starting Oct. 26, the Knights will host the Isleworth-UCF Collegiate Invitational. Recognized as one of the top tournaments in the country, the three-day event will be held at the Isleworth Golf & Country Club. The 2008 edition will serve as the tournament's fifth installment.
