Sept. 25, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF softball team will conclude its fall season Friday in a doubleheader against Seminole Community College at the UCF Softball Complex. The first game will begin at 5 p.m. with the second game to follow.

Last weekend, the Knights hosted the UCF Fall Tournament where they tied Seminole 3-3 on Sunday. Saturday the team went up against Brevard Community College, posting a 2-0 shutout, before coming out victorious against Indian River Community College 7-1. On Sunday, the Knights triumphed over Miami-Dade 11-1 after facing Seminole earlier in the day.

Freshman Natalie Land (Mayo, Fla.) paced the Knights at the plate during the tournament, racking up five hits and two RBI, while fellow freshman Olivia Alvarez (Miami, Fla.) also had five hits at the event, with both newcomers posting a pair of two-hit performances. Senior Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) added two hits, a double and two RBI.

UCF is coming off its most successful season since the program's inception in 2002, posting a 49-20 record in 2007, its most wins in program history, and winning the Conference USA Championship. At the NCAA Gainesville Regional, the Knights defeated USF and Georgia Tech, before upsetting then-No. 1 Florida, 1-0, to advance to the Regional championship game.

At the conclusion of the regular-season, Marquita Council was named the C-USA Newcomer of the Year and Allison Kime and Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) were both named to the All-C-USA First Team. Abby McClain (Waterloo, Iowa) and Tiffany Lane (Moreno Valley, Calif.) represented the Knights on the C-USA All-Freshman Team and Kime was also voted onto the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Regional First Team for the second-consecutive year.

Javier, McClain and Lane all return for the 2008-09 season, along with seven additional letterwinners from the 2008 C-USA Championship squad. Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie and the Knights welcome five freshmen for the upcoming season, as well as a pair of new faces to the coaching staff in former Knights Stephanie Best and Jennifer Whitley.
