UCF Softball Opens Fall Season with Home Tournament

Sept. 19, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF softball team will play host to the UCF Fall Tournament Sept. 20-21 at the UCF Softball Complex, welcoming a total of 15 area college teams to the two-day event. The Knights will play Brevard Community College and Indian River Community College Saturday, before entertaining Seminole Community College and Miami-Dade Community College Sunday.

UCF is coming off its most successful season since the program's inception in 2002, posting a 49-20 record in 2007, its most wins in program history, and winning the Conference USA Championship. At the NCAA Gainesville Regional, the Knights defeated USF and Georgia Tech, before upsetting then-No. 1 Florida, 1-0, to advance to the Regional championship game.

At the conclusion of the regular-season, Marquita Council was named the C-USA Newcomer of the Year and Allison Kime and Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) were both named to the All-C-USA First Team. Abby McClain (Waterloo, Iowa) and Tiffany Lane (Moreno Valley, Calif.) represented the Knights on the C-USA All-Freshman Team and Kime was also voted onto the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Southeast Regional First Team for the second-consecutive year.

Javier, McClain and Lane all return for the 2008-09 season, along with seven additional letterwinners from the 2008 C-USA Championship squad. Head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie and the Knights welcome five freshmen for the upcoming season, as well as a pair of new faces to the coaching staff in former Knights Stephanie Best and Jennifer Whitley.
