July 21, 2008

BRANDENBURG, Germany (www.ucfathletics.com) - Participating in one of the largest regattas of the year, UCF rower Caitlin Pauls represented Team Canada at the Under-23 World Championships in Brandenburg, Germany, last weekend. The native of St. Catharines, Ontario, rowed in the women's pair and took eighth place while competing three times in three days.

"It was an amazing experience to be able to represent both Canada and UCF at the World Championships, and I hope I will get the chance to do it again in the future," said Pauls, who just completed her senior year with the Knights. "I also want to say thanks to everyone at UCF that have helped me over the years to get to this point. I look forward to returning to UCF in the fall and being able to share the experience and knowledge I have gained over this summer with my teammates."

Pairing with Samantha Smith, the duo finished third in the first heat of the women's 2- event Thursday, posting a time of 7:58.10. Australia claimed first in the heat thanks to a 7:39.16 performance and advanced straight to the A final Sunday. Germany earned second place while Ukraine completed the course in fourth.

The following day, Pauls and Smith placed sixth in the repechage as Great Britain took first. That moved Canada into the B final Saturday where it brought home second, and eighth overall, with a time of 8:49.26, just under nine seconds behind Ukraine.
