UCF's David Johnson Wins State Championship Qualifier

June 6, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF men's golfer David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne) won his Florida Amateur Championship qualifier earlier this week, posting a 4-under-68 at The Golf Club at Bridgewater in Lakeland. The senior will now participate in the state championship, which begins June 19 at the Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta.

At the qualifier, Johnson shared medalist honors with Winter Haven's Drew Matthews. UCF redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale) also qualified for the championship after carding a one-under 71.

Johnson posted an impressive junior campaign for the Knights in 2007-08, helping the squad earn an invitation to the NCAA West Regional. The lone UCF player to compete in all 12 of the team's events, Johnson, a transfer from Brevard Community College, garnered Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honors following the league championship in April.

He recorded five top-10 showings during the season and had 11 par or better rounds. Johnson was also named to the All-C-USA First Team.
