TEQUESTA, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Competing against some of the best players in the Sunshine State, senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne) of the UCF men's golf team finished tied for third at the Florida State Amateur Championship Sunday. Johnson was one of 168 golfers who participated in the four-day tournament at the Jupiter Hills Club.
Three UCF players competed at the event, as sophomore Kyle Cobb (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) and redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale) were also in the field. Giwon Suh, who concluded his career with the Knights in the spring, tied for 18th.
Johnson (72-75-67-76--290) concluded the tournament 10 strokes behind champion Judson Eustaquio.
More than 900 participants attempted to qualify for the championship.
Johnson and Suh both advanced following two days of play. After 36 holes, the field was cut to the low 70 and ties with a two-round total of 153. Johnson recorded a two-round total of 147.
During the 2007-08 campaign, Johnson shined for the Knights. The lone UCF player to compete in all 12 of the team's events, the Brevard Community College transfer garnered Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honors. Johnson helped the Knights earn an invitation to the NCAA West Regional and also earned a spot on the All-C-USA First Team.
Suh, who resides in Orlando, appeared in five tournaments this past season as a senior. He posted a pair of top-10 finishes for the Knights.
Cobb played in three events in 2007-08, while Schneider sat out the campaign as a redshirt. The Knights spent the majority of the season ranked in the top-25 nationally.
