ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Three members of the UCF men's golf squad will be in action this week at the Florida State Amateur Championship at the Jupiter Hills Club in Tequesta. Senior David Johnson (Palm Bay, Fla./Melbourne), sophomore Kyle Cobb (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon) and redshirt freshman Brad Schneider (Valrico, Fla./Bloomingdale) will be competing against the state's top amateur golfers.
The event will have 168 competitors and will conclude on Sunday. Participants will play 18 holes each on Thursday and Friday. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 70 and ties. The final two rounds will be played on Saturday and Sunday.
More than 900 participants attempted to qualify for the championship at 13 sites across the site.
Johnson tied for first at the state championship qualifier in Lakeland. He posted an impressive junior campaign for the Knights in 2007-08, helping the squad to the NCAA West Regional. The lone UCF player to compete in all 12 of the team's events, Johnson, a transfer from Brevard Community College, garnered Conference USA Newcomer of the Year honors.
Schneider redshirted this past season. He also qualified for the state championship in Lakeland.
Cobb qualified for the event in Tallahassee. He appeared in three tournaments for the Knights as a freshman last year.
