Sosa to Play for Puerto Rican U-18 National Team

June 16, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Before freshman guard Isaac Sosa starts his collegiate career with the UCF men's basketball team this fall, he will compete for his homeland this summer. Sosa, who signed a National Letter of Intent with UCF in the spring, is slated to compete for Puerto Rico at the FIBA Americas Championship U18 for Men this July.

The event features eight teams and will be held from July 14-18 in Formosa, Argentina.

Sosa attended Grandview Prep in Boca Raton and earned Florida Class 1A All-State First-Team honors as a senior in 2007-08. The 6-foot-3 Sosa averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 assists and 6.0 rebounds. He helped lead Grandview Prep to the state final game.

Last summer, Sosa helped Puerto Rico qualify for the 2008 FIBA event. As a member of Puerto Rico's U-17 National Team, he averaged 11.8 points in five games as Puerto Rico claimed the Centrobasket U17 Championship. In the gold medal game against the Dominican Republic, Sosa totaled seven points in 16 minutes. He poured in 18 points in a victory over the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico will play five contests at the event in Argentina. The squad is scheduled to open the tournament against Uruguay and will then face Venezuela and the United States. Argentina, Bahamas, Canada and Mexico are also competing in the tournament.

Sosa will join a UCF program that finished fourth a year ago in only its third campaign in Conference USA. Head coach Kirk Speraw's Knights have won 122 games in the last six seasons, which ranks 49th nationally during that span.

Last year, the Knights made their debut at the new UCF Arena. The 10,000-seat venue is one of the finest facilities in the nation.

Season tickets for the 2008-09 campaign are scheduled to go on sale in July.
