UCF Women's Golf Team Tied For 17th After Opening Round Action At The NCAA East Regional

May 8, 2008

Athens, Ga. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team opened NCAA East Regional play on Thursday by posting a team score of 312 (+24) in first round action at the University of Georgia Golf Course. The Knights, who are tied for 17th overall with UNC-Wilmington, were led by freshman Jessy Tang's (Miami, Fla.) 74 (+2).

Tang made a team-high four birdies on the 6,335-yard layout and is tied for 23rd in the individual standings.

"We are started off well, but kind of hit a lull there and could not get it going again," head coach Emilee Klein said. "We are not in the position we want to be, but there are two days left and we are capable of playing much better."

Top-ranked Duke grabbed the first-round lead as the Blue Devils were the lone team to shoot under par with a 285 (-3) total. Louisville's Sara-Maude Juneau is the overall leader after carding a 67 (-5). She leads Duke's Amanda Blumenherst and South Carolina's Benedicte Toumpsin by one stroke after both players fired 68's (-4) in their respective opening rounds.

The Knights will tee off at 8 a.m. in round-two play after battling high winds during their afternoon round on Thursday. "Having the early tee time (Friday) is a big bonus for us," Klein added. "We just have to go out and take advantage of it."

Junior May Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla.) carded a 77 (+5) and was just one-over on the back nine to keep the Knights within 14 strokes of the eighth-place team. Virginia holds the No. 8 spot on the team leaderboard after the Cavaliers posted a 298 (+10). The top eight teams all advance to the NCAA Championship slated for May 20-23 in Albuquerque, N.M.

Junior Stephanie Connelly (Pasadena, Md.) posted an 80 (+8) and local product Leigh Crosby (Athens, Ga.) carded an 81 (+9) to also count towards the Knights' team score. Connelly's round got off to a fast start with an eagle on the first hole. She holed out her approach shot from the fairway to score a two on the par-4 opening hole.

Live scoring for the three-day event will be available on www.golfstat.com.
