Hattiesburg, Miss. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) extended her hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the first inning to lead the UCF (43-18) softball team to a, 1-0, win at Southern Miss (25-29, 9-15) Sunday afternoon at the USM Softball Complex to clinch second place in Conference USA with a 16-7 league clip.
Javier's mark is the longest in program history. Jania Shinhoster held the record previous to Javier, hitting in 14-consecutive games during the 2005 season.
Also recording hits for the Knights were Lexi Gresham (Fresno, Calif.), Ashley Van Ryn (Atlanta, Ga.), Marquita Council (Orlando, Fla.) and Tiffany Lane (Moreno Valley, Calif.). Lane also scored the Black and Gold's only run of the contest.
Allison Kime (Brandon, Fla.) earned her 28th win of the season, pitching her 12th shutout of 2008 after allowing only three hits, none for extra bases and striking out nine.
Lane led off the opening frame with an infield-bunt single and moved to third courtesy of a line shot down the right-field line by Javier. USM starter, Samantha Davis, threw a wild pitch past the catcher to score Lane from third and plate the Knights' first and only run of the game.
The contest was UCF's 14th one-run game of the season, with it holding a 7-7 record in the single-run affairs.
The No. 2 Knights will face-off with No. 7 Southern Miss Thursday at 1 p.m. EST in the opening round of the Conference USA Softball Championship in Houston, Texas.
The Knights look to clinch a spot in the NCAA Tournament when they compete for the Conference USA Softball Championship title May 8-10 at Houston. For tickets, visit c-usa.org.
