TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Coming off its best finish at the Conference USA Championships in school history, the UCF track and field squad sends a deep roster to the NCAA East Regionals this weekend. The two-day event takes place at the Mike Long Track on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Fla.
The event gets underway at 12 p.m. EDT Friday with the beginning of the field events, while the running events commence at 3:30 p.m. EDT Friday with the 4x100-meter relay. Each of the running events that take place on Friday are preliminaries. Saturday's activities begin at 10 a.m. EDT.
The Knights finished third at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships in El Paso, Texas, two weeks ago. Junior Sheree Carter became the first C -USA Outdoor Individual Event Champion in school history w hen she won the heptathlon title with 4,833 points. That was a personal-best mark for Carter in the event. Freshman Lizzie Harris also charted an impressive performance at the C-USA Championships, scoring 28.33 points for the team.
The 2008 season has been an incredible season of firsts for first-year head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert, a championship caliber coach who was hired on June 4, 2007 and has taken the UCF program to new heights. UCF has broken 10 outdoor school records this season and tallied 12 NCAA regional-qualifying marks, the most in school history.
"We are looking forward to the NCAA regional meet in Tallahassee this weekend," Smith Gilbert said. "We have a full field going to the meet this weekend. Our goals will be to give 100-percent effort, achieve personal bests and qualify for nationals."
Florida State University hosts the event for the first time in NCAA East Regional history. The top five finishers in each individual event and the top three finishers in the 4x100-meter relay and the 4x400-meter relay will automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships.
For ticket information, please call (888) FSU-NOLE. One-day passes are $10 for adults and $7 for youth, students and seniors. Two-day passes are $15 for adults and $10 for youth,students and seniors. Tickets will be on sale at the track on meet day.
