Men's Basketball Adds Point Guard from Texas

May 23, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF men's basketball head coach Kirk Speraw announced Friday that point guard William Weathers of Lewisville, Texas, has signed a National Letter of Intent and will play for the Knights this upcoming season. Weathers will be one of five true freshmen on UCF's 2008-09 roster.

Weathers played on the prep level at Lewisville High School, which is located outside of Dallas. As a senior, the 6-foot-1 Weathers averaged 17.5 points, 7.2 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals. He helped lead his squad to a 27-8 mark and a No. 13 ranking in the final Texas Class 5A poll.

Weathers is a native of New Orleans who moved to Texas due to Hurricane Katrina.

"William will be a great addition to our program," Speraw said. "He is a dedicated and competitive basketball player. He has shown the ability to overcome great challenges and adversity during his years in high school. We look forward to him joining the UCF basketball family."

As a junior in 2006-07, Weathers averaged 12.2 points, 4.2 assists, 3.7 boards and 3.0 steals as the Fighting Farmers posted a 30-4 mark. Following the regular season, he earned a spot on the All-District 6-5A Second Team.

"UCF is getting a tough, hard-nosed kid," Lewisville head coach Henry Thomas said. "(William) will give 100 percent every game. You will see him out there diving on the floor... taking charges. He will be one of the hardest workers on the team."

Weathers is the second recruit to sign with the Knights this spring as guard Isaac Sosa inked an NLI on May 7. Guard A.J. Rompza, forward P.J. Gaynor and center Jakub Kusmieruk signed NLIs with the Knights in the fall.

Speraw's program is entering its fourth campaign in Conference USA. A year ago, the Knights finished fourth in the 12-team league. In the last six seasons, UCF has claimed 122 victories, which ranks 49th nationally during that span.

In 2007-08, the Knights made their debut at the new UCF Arena. The 10,000-seat venue is one of the finest facilities in the nation.
