ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - One of Florida's top prep players will play for the Knights this upcoming season as guard Isaac Sosa signed a National Letter of Intent with the UCF men's basketball program, head coach Kirk Speraw announced Wednesday. As a senior this past year at Grandview Prep in Boca Raton, Sosa earned Florida Class 1A All-State First-Team honors.
Listed at 6-foot-3, Sosa averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 assists and 6.0 rebounds as senior. A native of Puerto Rico, Sosa competed on the AAU level with the Miami Tropics. In 2007-08, he helped lead Grandview Prep to the state final game, but did not play in his team's last two contests due to an injury.
"We are extremely excited that Isaac is joining our UCF basketball family. He has great instincts for the game of basketball," said Speraw. "He is a great shooter and a great addition to our program. Isaac is an outstanding student who posted a 3.9 grade point average at Grandview Prep and he plans on studying engineering at UCF."
In addition to earning all-state honors, Sosa was named the South Florida Sun-Sentinel's 3A-2A-1A Player of the Year and the small schools player of the year by the Palm Beach Post. During the year, he shot 52 percent overall and 79 percent from the free-throw line. Sosa connected on 62 3-pointers.
He propelled the Pride to the state final four by scoring 21 points, including the game-winning triple with 35 seconds to play, in the regional championship game against Miami's Choice Learning Academy.
Sosa was coached by Joe Dawson at Grandview Prep.
"In my 17 years of coaching, Isaac has been the best and most well-rounded player that I have been around," said Dawson. "He has a great work ethic and tremendous character. Isaac is a great student-athlete and will be a great fit at UCF."
Sosa will be one of four true freshmen on the UCF roster this upcoming campaign. Guard A.J. Rompza, forward P.J. Gaynor and center Jakub Kusmieruk signed NLIs with the Knights in the fall.
Speraw's program is entering its fourth campaign in Conference USA. A year ago, the Knights finished fourth in the 12-team league. In the last six seasons, UCF has claimed 122 victories, which ranks 49th nationally during that span.
A year ago, the Knights made their debut at the new UCF Arena. The 10,000-seat venue is one of the finest facilities in the nation.
