UCF 4, Memphis 2
Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Senior hurler Allison Kime (Brandon, Fla.) recorded two wins in the circle, while posting three hits, two doubles and three RBI at the plate, to lead the UCF (38-17, 13-6 C-USA) softball team to a Conference USA doubleheader sweep of Memphis (24-23, 4-12 C-USA) Saturday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex. The Knights blanked the Tigers, 5-0, in game one, before pulling off a, 4-2, victory in the nightcap.
Kime (23-9) threw 10.2 innings for the Knights, allowing only one earned run on three hits, while totaling 14 strikeouts on the day. Kime now needs only four more strikeouts to break the UCF single-season record of 266 that she set last season.
Freshman Diana Rojas (Miami, Fla.) made her first collegiate start in the circle in game two, allowing only one run on two hits, while fanning two in 3.1 innings of work.
Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) and Tiffany Lane (Moreno Valley, Calif.) also registered three hits for the Black and Gold in the doubleheader, with Javier scoring three runs and recording a RBI and Lane adding two runs and walking twice. Hillary Barrow (Miami, Fla.) cranked her first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the first inning of game two, and added a double, three runs and three RBI in the pair of contests.
The top-five batters in the Knights' order recorded 12 of the teams' total 14 hits in the doubleheader and scored all of its runs.
In game one, an error by the Memphis third baseman and a perfectly executed squeeze-play by Cat Snapp (Niceville, Fla.) gave the Knights their first run of the contest in the fourth inning, before a single by Lindsay Dean (Jacksonville, Fla.) gave the Black and Gold a two-run advantage going into the fifth.
Three additional runs crossed for the Knights in the fifth inning courtesy of back-to-back doubles Barrow and Kime. UCF had five straight hits to start off the frame, with Lane leading off the inning with a single through the right side. Marquita Council (Orlando, Fla.) and Javier followed up with singles of their own, before Barrow's double down the left-field line plated one and Kime's double off the right centerfield wall scored two and sealed the game for the Black and Gold.
A Javier single brought in the Knights' first run of game two, before Barrow's two-run home run over the left-centerfield wall made the score 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning.
The Tigers plated a single run in the second inning, while adding another in the top of the sixth to pull within one run of UCF, but Kime brought in an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after the Knights loaded the bases on two walks and a single. She blasted a long fly ball to left field, allowing Lane to score from third base.
The Black and Gold concludes its three-game series with Memphis Sunday at Noon at the UCF Softball Complex.
