April 16, 2008

El Paso, Texas (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team concluded play at the Texas Roadhouse Conference USA Championship on Tuesday, placing fourth in the nine-team field. High winds escalated the scores on the final day of the tournament as the Knights carded a 328 (+40) in final-round action at the Butterfield Trail Golf Club.

Tulsa captured the league championship and automatic bid into NCAA Regional play with the victory. The Golden Hurricane posted the best team score of the day at 303 (+15) to collect an 18-stroke victory over East Carolina (922, +58). Woeri Shin captured medalist honors by six strokes with a 54-hole total of 219 (+4).

SMU moved up to third following a 314 (+26) in the final round to post a three-day total of 932 (+68). The Knights were fourth with a total of 945 (+81), six strokes better than fifth-place Memphis (951, +87).

"We started out the day playing pretty decent, but the wind really picked up with gusts up to 35 miles per hour and we could not adjust," head coach Emilee Klein said. "We're disappointed that we did not play our best, but we are keeping our hopes up that we'll get a regional bid."

Freshman Jessy Tang (Miami, Fla.) was the top Knight finisher, placing in a tie for 11th with a three-round total of 234 (+18). Tang's finish was her best as a collegian. Junior May Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla.) carded the best round for the second-consecutive, posting an 81 (+9) to finish in a tie for 14th at 235 (+19).

Sophomore Leigh Crosby (Athens, Ga.) collected her second top 20 finish of the season, tying for 19th with a three-day score of 238 (+22). Junior Stephanie Connelly tied for 23rd (240, +24), while freshman Katie Detlefsen tied for 27th (241, +25).

The Knights, who were ranked 42nd in the latest Golfstat/Sagarin Performan Index, will now await word on whether they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional Championships, which are slated to begin May 8-10.
