Birmingham, Ala. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Senior hurler Allison Kime (Brandon, Fla.) pitched a one-hit shutout with seven strikeouts to lead the UCF softball team to a 2-0 victory over UAB at George Wade Park Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Knights took the three-game Conference USA series 2-1and moved their league record to 3-3.
"It was a hard-fought weekend and the team came up with key hits to give us the upper-hand in the series win," Luers-Gillispie said. "Being able to take this series from a good UAB team was important for us to stay on track in meeting our goals this season."
Kime improved her record to 10-7 on the season and registered her 125th strikeout in her third shutout of the season.
The Knights' California trio led the Black and Gold at the plate with Lexi Gresham (Fresno, Calif.) posting a RBI single and Tiffany Lane (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) both registering a hit and a run in the contest.
Lane extended her hitting streak to eight games in the win, tying her with Javier for the longest stint of 2008.
"We had excellent production from the top of our lineup the entire weekend," Luers-Gillispie said. "Marquita, Tiffany, Breanne and Hillary really established themselves as the key to our success."
Runs were hard to come by in the series finale, but the Knights finally put a pair of runs across in the fifth inning courtesy of a pair of hits and a pair of UAB errors. Lane led off the inning with a single up the middle of the infield, Javier walked and a bunt single by Barrow forced pitcher Jennifer Nelson to botch the throw to first base, allowing Lane to score. A line-drive single to left field by Gresham gave the Knights a two-run lead and the game, plating Javier from third base.
