Top-Ranked Duke Wins Second Consecutive UCF Challenge Title

SORRENTO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - No. 1 Duke captured its second consecutive title at the UCF Challenge To Benefit Florida Children's Hospital on Tuesday at RedTail Golf Club. The Blue Devils shot a season-low three-round total of 851 (282-282-287) to finish 13-under-par and give Duke a nine-shot win against Purdue in the 18-team field.

Duke sophomore Alison Whitaker captured individual medalist honors, shooting an eight-under-par 208 (65-71-72) for the first tournament win of her career. Included in Whitaker's win was a course record of 65 (-7) on the opening day of play. Two-time National Player of the Year Amanda Blumenherst, the defending champion from the 2007 Challenge who has already won three individual crowns this season, finished in a tie for third place with Georgia's Garrett Phillips after carding a five-under-par 211.

"I am excited about this win even though we were forced to contend with treacherous winds," Duke head coach Dan Brooks said. "We handled the conditions today very well and our golfers did a good job of knowing how far they could drive the ball. We have the ability to drive the ball well I am pleased with the way we performed."

Purdue finished in second place with a four-under par 860 (289-283-288), while UCLA was third with a one-under par 863 (286-291-286). Florida State's Caroline Westrup shot the lowest round of the day with a 66 on the final 18 holes.

Host UCF finished in a tie for 14th place overall, finishing with a three-round total of 894 (292-299-303). Junior Stephanie Connelly (Pasadena, Md.) was the top finisher for the Knights, carding a 74 on the final day of play to finish in a tie for 31st place with a 220 (74-72-74). Junior May Tomimbang (Kissimmee, Fla.) tied for 36th place with a 221 (73-75-73), while Jessy Tang (Bangkok, Thailand) and Leigh Crosby (Athens, Ga.) finished tied for 72nd place with 229s.
