Conference USA Release in PDF Format
ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF track and field team ranks among Conference USA's top five in nine events so far this season, according to the latest Conference USA rankings released Tuesday by the league office.
Freshman Lizzie Harris (Miami, Fla.) ranks first in the conference in two events - the 400-meter dash and the high jump - and second in the 200-meter dash. Junior Sheree Carter (Tallahassee, Fla.) ranks second in C-USA in the pentathlon, while junior Dione Thomas (Jacksonville, Fla.) is second in the long jump. Carter and Thomas are both nearing NCAA provisional-qualifying marks in their respective events, while Harris has already provisionally qualified in the high jump.
"We have really had a nice mix of athletes setting PRs and school records this season," UCF head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert said. "I am encouraged because everyone we have on our team can do great things. Lizzie's provisional mark was a great starting point, but Sheree is 100 points away from a provisional in the pentathlon and Dione is two centimeters away in the long jump. All of our athletes are really motivated, and practice has really started to pick up. They all want to do great things and they believe that they can."
The school's 4x400-meter relay and distance medley relay squads set school records this past weekend and rank fifth and fourth, respectively, in Conference USA standings so far this season. Senior Victoria Chin (Orlando, Fla.) is third in the conference in the 60-meter hurdles, while Thomas is fourth in the triple jump.
