ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF's women's soccer team got off to a 2-0 start this spring by defeating the University of Victoria Feb. 16, 2-0, and the University of Alberta Feb. 19, 5-0 The Knights now prepare for a trip to the Lone Star State where they square off against Texas Tech and Texas Saturday in Austin.
"We are fairly pleased with the overall performance for the first competition in the spring," said associate head coach Colby Hale. "Our goals were to find a rhythm offensively and to not give away easy chances. I thought we accomplished those goals vs. Victoria. We created some good chances and scored two great goals. And our backline did a good job of preventing chances and protecting the space behind them, while the goalkeepers remained strong when they did face a few dangerous attacks. Overall it gave us some things to work on for the rest of the spring."
Sophomore Yvonne George scored both goals in the win over Victoria. Sophomore Becca Thomas set up George's first goal by serving a ball over the top where George collected it and beat the keeper. Junior Danielle Dos Santos got the next assist by sending a pass through the back line and George once again converted.
The offense returned vs. Alberta in the 5-0 victory. Dos Santos collected a hat trick with George, sophomore Nikki Moore and sophomore Brianna Schooley earning assists. Freshman Amanda Martorana also picked up a goal, assisted by George, and Thomas converted a penalty kick after dos Santos was taken down on an attack in the box.
