Manoa, Hawaii (www.ucfathletics.com) - Freshman shortstop Tiffany Lane (Moreno Valley, Calif.) hit a three-run walk-off home run in the 10th inning to lift the UCF softball team to a 5-3 victory over Long Beach State Friday afternoon at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Statdium. The home run was the first of Lane's career.
With the win, the Knights move to 4-2 on the season, and Allison Kime (Brandon, Fla.) picked up her third win in the circle on the year. The senior pitched all 10 innings, recording nine strikeouts and allowing only one earned run.
Lane and Hillary Barrow (Miami, Fla.) led the Knights with two hits a piece, while Breanne Javier (Castaic, Calif.) added a RBI for the Black and Gold.
Runs were hard to come by in the tight contest, with neither team scoring a run through the first eight innings. With the international tie-breaker rule in effect, Long Beach State plated the first run of the game in the ninth inning after Whitney Radcliff, who started the inning at second base, scored on a grounder by Lacy Tyler.
The Knights answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning when Lane scored on a RBI single up the middle by Javier.
Two more runs crossed the plate for the 49ers in the top of the 10th inning, but UCF was not giving up as easily as Long Beach State hoped.
Barrow knocked in Kime with a single up the middle to make the score 3-2, and with two outs Lane stepped up to the plate to win the game for the Black and Gold.
The Knights continue play in the Hawaii Paradise Classic Friday at 8 p.m. ET against Kentucky, before facing No. 16 Hawaii at 12 a.m. ET.
