ORLANDO, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - After the gold squad posted a 5-3 win in game one of the UCF Black & Gold World Series, the black team struck back Wednesday to take game two, 4-1. The three-game series, as well as UCF's fall season, concludes Thursday with first pitch slated for 9:30 a.m. at Jay Bergman Field.
Mitch Herold took the hill for the black team, going 3.0 innings with five strikeouts, no walks and one earned run. Cody Allen relieved Herold in the fourth and immediately retired the first three batters he faced on just 10 pitches, highlighted by two strikeouts. Allen needed just eight pitches to set gold down in order in the fifth, and faced the minimum 12 hitters through his first four frames. The freshman earned the win and finished with 4.2 shutout innings to his credit, four strikeouts, two hits and two walks. Caleb Graham picked up the save by pitching the final 1.1 innings of scoreless ball.
Kyle Sweat served as the starter for gold and lasted 4.0 innings with eight punch outs, including striking out the side in the second, while also recording one walk, four hits and one earned run. Brennan Dobbins came on in the fifth, surrendering three runs in 1.1 innings of work. Paul Cinder and Evan Stobbs combined on the remaining 2.2 innings without giving up a run.
Nick Choto went 3-for-4 on the black team, swiping two bases and driving in a run. Tim Russell also amassed three hits and drove in a pair. For gold, Ryan Richardson added three hits and scored a run.
Gold came out firing with four singles in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Richardson led off with a base hit, reached second on a wild pitch and traveled to third on a ground out. With two down, Stobbs dropped a single into right center for the game's first run. Shane Brown and Rob Lara each followed with singles but Herold was able to leave the bases loaded to limit the damage.
Sweat cruised through the first three innings, however doubles by Kiko Vazquez and Russell in the fourth allowed black to even things up at 1-1. They took the lead in sixth as Chris Duffy got things going by pulling a single to right, advancing to second on a wild pitch and scoring by way of an RBI single off the bat of Russell. Brandon Romans followed suit with a walk and both runners were moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt from Matt Lambert. Choto then chopped a single over first base and into right field to make it 3-1, and Josh Siebenaler smacked a single into center for the final three-run cushion.
