Birmingham, Ala. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF women's soccer team saw its nine-game undefeated streak come to an end Friday in a 2-0 loss at UAB. The Knights, who were 6-0-3 since Sept. 16, dropped back into a tie with Memphis for first in Conference USA as their record moved to 10-3-3 on the year and 5-1-1 in league play.
The Black and Gold was outshot 16-11 in the match. Five of the 11 shots were on goal, including three that were saved by Blazer keeper Kate Blankenship and two that were stopped by UAB defenders.
UAB (8-6-1, 4-2-0 C-USA) tested UCF keeper Jennifer Manis during the first half, but the Blazers could not solve the Knight senior as she made four saves during the opening frame. UCF did have a 4-1 edge in corner kicks as both teams entered the break in a scoreless deadlock.
When the second half opened, the Blazers' offense returned and eventually got on the board in the 54th minute on a goal by Danya Barsalona. UAB tried to make it 2-0 just a few minutes later, placing two shots on net that Manis was able to turn aside.
The Knights tried to switch momentum around after the 57th minute, earning three corner kicks and two shots on goal from junior Hanna Wilde and senior Kate Begley, both of which were saved Blankenship. UCF controlled a lot of the action for approximately the next 30 minutes, however it was unable to notch the game-tying goal. The Blazers put the match away in the 86th minute when Sally Palmer tallied her seventh goal of the year.
UCF now prepares for its final regular season road game, a Sunday clash with Memphis at 2 p.m. ET. The Tigers are 5-0-1 in C-USA and just like UCF, have 16 points to sit in first place in the standings.
