MIAMI, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - A late goal from freshman Steven Cabas gave host Florida International a 3-2 edge over UCF in Conference USA men's soccer action at University Park on Wednesday night.
The Knights (4-7-1, 0-2-1 C-USA) struck first in the 14th minute. Junior co-captain Ryan Roushandel (Atlanta, Ga./Marist School) took a low shot from outside the box that found the bottom right corner. FIU (1-8-2, 1-2-0 C-USA) tied the score at 1-1 when Cabas scored the first of his two goals, unassisted, seconds before time expired for the intermission.
Roushandel recorded his second goal of the game - and team-leading eighth of the season - in the 67th minute as his shot slipped past FIU goalkeeper Kyle Thomas into the right corner. Sophomore midfielder Cam Jordan (Fort Wayne, Ind./Canterbury HS) assisted.
Sophomore Christian Caporaletti evened the score at 2-2 just over a minute later then, in the 84th minute, Cabas netted the gamewinner.
The Golden Panthers owned a 16-11 margin in shots as Thomas made five saves on the night. UCF freshman goalkeeper Sean Johnson (Lilburn, Ga./Brookwood HS) also stopped five shots.
"We played a tough FIU team tonight," said UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham. "We continued to get our chances but couldn't finish them. FIU was able to capitalize on an opportunity late in the game and hold on for the win."
The Knights have a one-week hiatus from competition before hosting C-USA opponent Kentucky on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
