OXFORD, Miss. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Mississippi's second-half goal stood up as the Lady Rebels edged the UCF women's soccer team, 1-0, Sunday in Oxford, Miss. With the loss, the Knights' three-game winning streak came to an end while their record dropped to 4-2-0 on the season.
For the match, Ole Miss (3-1-2) outshot UCF 15-11. Leading the way for the Black and Gold, junior Hanna Wilde (Westlake, Ohio) and sophomore Becca Thomas (Burlington, Wash.) each posted three shots, while senior keeper Jennifer Manis (Pensacola, Fla.) notched two saves in net.
Similar to the final result, UCF and Ole Miss were virtually even throughout the day as the Lady Rebels had a 6-4 lead in corner kicks and a 3-2 advantage in saves. However, the Knights finished with 11 fouls compared to Ole Miss' 10.
The difference in the match occurred in the 66th minute. As Hannah Weatherly gained possession of the ball, she sent a cross over to Chrissy Strini who connected from eight yards out for her third goal of the year.
After the goal, the Knights recorded four shots including one on goal from Thomas in the 70th minute but Ole Miss goalkeeper Ann Shelton made the save. Shelton, who came into the match at the beginning of the second half, combined with Megan Vickery for the shutout.
With the weekend trip completed, UCF returns to Orlando to begin its longest homestand of the season. The Knights welcome Miami Wednesday at 7 p.m. as the match marks the first of five-straight home games at the UCF Soccer Complex.
