UCF Football Fall Camp Report: Day Eight

Aug. 9, 2007

Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - The UCF football team went back inside for Wednesday's afternoon practice after working outdoors on Tuesday. It was the eighth workout of fall camp for the Knights and the team spent a good portion of the practice working on its passing game.

The offense and defense both worked on red zone and third-down passing situations and following some individual drills and skelly work, the practice concluded with the units squaring off against each other in team drills.

Senior quarterback Kyle Israel (Orlando, Fla./University) and junior wide receiver Rocky Ross (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) connected on a nice deep ball during to highlight the team drills for the offense. Senior Javid James (New Orleans, La./Edna Karr Magnet) also had a nice diving reception on the sideline.

Ross, James and junior Willie Thornton (Belle Glades, Fla./Glades Central) are the only receivers on the roster with game experience as new receivers coach David Kelly is working with a youthful group of receivers. Along with the veteran trio, the Knights have at least 10 receivers on the roster that are either redshirt or true freshman.

The freshmen in camp are all getting equal opportunities to impress Kelly and he said it is a positive to see a different one take positive strides each and every practice.

"It is hard to individualize because one day it is one person, then, the next day they are having a tough day, but someone else is stepping up," Kelly said. "Everyday it has been someone different, so it is hard to individualize anyone, but the group as a whole I am extremely exciting about."

The Knights will practice on Friday morning after three consecutive afternoon sessions. The session will begin at 9:10 a.m. at the UCF practice fields.
