Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - For the fourth time during fall camp, the UCF football team practiced in its 120-yard indoor facility as the Knights worked out for just over two hours in Nicholson Fieldhouse on Friday morning. The team once again went through individual drills as the players worked on different fundamentals and techniques during the opening of practice before turning the focus towards the passing game and a situational scrimmage.
Head Coach George O'Leary was pleased with the offensive execution throughout the practice until a minor glitch inside the 20-yard line towards the end. "Offensively, we did some good things until late when we got in the red zone," the fourth-year coach said. "We have to continue to work on that."
The defense turned it up at the end of practice, but O'Leary said there is still work to be done. "We gave up to many big plays. If you keep the ball in front of you, you will be ok," the fourth-year coach added. "We got a lot of work done in two hours and 10 minutes and that is all you can ask for."
Before moving towards a situational scrimmage period, the team worked together to polish the passing attack offensively and fine-tune the pass defense. The offense made several nice plays, including long completions from both Kyle Israel and Joe Weatherford. Freshman receiver Kamar Aiken and junior Rocky Ross were the recipients of some of those nice throws.
"I think we are where we want to be (at this point of camp)," O'Leary added. "We still have a day left of installation and we will get some more scrimmage work in tomorrow night, but we'll move to in-season installation on Monday.
UCF will hold one more practice during fall camp on Saturday night. That session is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. at the practice fields. The practice was originally scheduled for 3 p.m.
The Knights open the 2007 campaign on Sept. 1 at NC State. The team will make its home debut in Bright House Networks Stadium vs. Texas on Sept. 15. Season tickets for the first season at the on-campus stadium are still available and can be purchased by calling 407-UCF-1000.
