Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - As the Florida Collegiate Summer League begins to wind down, the UCF baseball team saw seven of its members selected to participate in the FCSL All-Star game. Seniors Dwayne Bailey (Tampa, Fla.), Jaager Good (Atlanta, Ga.), Ryan Richardson (Lake Mary, Fla.) and Tim Russell (Maitland, Fla.), juniors Kyle Sweat (Apopka, Fla.) and Justin Weiss (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Shane Brown (Winter Park, Fla.) all earned all-star honors, as the game is scheduled to take place Sunday at 5 p.m. at Sanford Memorial Stadium.
Bailey has cranked out a team-high 26 hits and scored 12 runs for the Sanford River Rats, and boasts a .299 average with the stick, which ranks seventh in the league. He is 10-for-12 in stolen bases and has five sacrifice hits to his credit.
Good, who finished the 2007 season at UCF as the Knights' Friday starter, has collected a 2-0 record with an impressive 1.76 ERA for the Winter Springs Barracudas. In six appearances, he has fanned 23 in just 15.1 innings.
Richardson has joined Bailey at Sanford, and has gone .276 at the plate with seven stolen bases. He also has 11 runs scored and has not made an error in 27 chances in the outfield.
Russell, who is playing for the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs, has had one of the most consistent summers in the entire league, currently ranking fifth with a .324 average and third with 16 RBI and a .451 on-base percentage. Meanwhile, the first baseman/catcher also leads his team with 24 hits, a .405 slugging percentage, 14 walks and only eight strikeouts.
For Winter Springs, Sweat is 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA in five appearances, including three starts. He has struck out 17 in 17.2 innings of work. Sweat's first win came vs. Altamonte Springs June 30, where he did not give up an earned run in 5.0 innings, striking out seven in the process.
Another hurler having his way in the FCSL for Winter Springs has been Weiss. In seven relief appearances, the UCF closer has converted two saves while going 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA. Weiss also has nine Ks in 8.2 innings, holding opponents to a .207 batting average.
Brown, a teammate of Russell in Winter Park, has started a team-high 22 games, posting a .259 batting average while throwing out five would-be basestealers from behind the plate. Brown has made just two errors in 158 chances for a .987 fielding percentage.
