Lexington, Va. (www.ucfathletics.com) - UCF women's golfer Sara Hurwitch (Potomac Falls, Va./Dominion) drained a par putt on the first extra hole to win the 30th Virginia State Golf Association Women's Stroke Play Championship, which concluded Thursday at Lexington Golf and Country Club (5,816 yards, par 35-36--71).
The leader through the first two rounds, Hurwitch closed with 2-over 73 to prevail in extra holes against University of Virginia sophomore Whitney Neuhauser, 19, of Barboursville, who closed with even-par 71. Both players concluded the championship at 4-over 217. Hurwitch secured her second VSGA title, having also captured the 2003 VSGA Junior Girls' Championship.
"I had to play steady all day," said Hurwitch. "I knew Whitney was going to be right around par, so I tried to stay focused. This feels great. It's a whole different environment when you are playing for a team and it's really helped me mature as a player."
Following her first season with the Knights, Hurwitch was named the Conference USA Freshman Golfer of the Year.
