Orlando, Fla. (www.ucfathletics.com) - Based on their impressive showings so far in the Florida Collegiate Summer League, six UCF baseball players were named to the FCSL Select Team by the league's board of directors. The squad will take on the U.S. Military All-Stars Saturday at 7 p.m. at Sanford Memorial Stadium.
With six selected to the team, UCF had the most representatives of any school. Dwayne Bailey (Sanford River Rats, Sr., Tampa, Fla.) got the starting job at shortstop even though he played primarily at second base last year with the Knights. Also in a change of scenery, Shane Brown (Winter Park Diamond Dawgs, So., Winter Park, Fla.) will be the starting first baseman. Brown saw time mostly at catcher and third base for the Black and Gold in 2007. Tim Russell (Winter Park Diamond Dawgs, Sr., Maitland, Fla.), the league leader in RBI with 12 and batting average with a .357 mark, will serve as the starting designated hitter.
Meanwhile, catcher Bryan Bennett (Sanford River Rats, Jr., Longwood, Fla.) earned a spot as one of the team's offensive reserves.
Getting the nod on the pitching staff was Jaager Good (Winter Springs Barracudas, Sr., Atlanta, Ga.) and Kyle Sweat (Winter Springs Barracudas, Jr., Apopka, Fla.). Good has a 1.12 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 8.0 innings, and Sweat is holding hitters to a .222 average in two appearances.
The FCSL has five teams this year located in central Florida, and like all top summer leagues uses wood bats compared to the traditional aluminum bats in the college game. A total of 11 Knights are participating in the FCSL this summer, while eight others are taking part in other leagues around the country.
